BOARD OF DIRECTORS PROFILES

 

 

Alta Turner, Secretary

 

Alta Turner is a founding Board member of GLT and a resident of the Town of New Baltimore. Alta educational background includes a  BA in Fine Arts (University of Illinois], followed by supplemental undergraduate classes in biological sciences  at Columbia University. Alta followed her undergraduate work with  master's degrees in Biology from CCNY and Statistics from Rutgers. In recent years, Alta’s interest in local planning has lead her to obtain an additional GIS certification from SUNY Albany.

 

 In her professional life, Alta has over 27 years of environmental consulting experience working with Ebasco Services and CH2M HILL where she has specialized in the design and analysis of environmental studies. She has worked on many diverse projects including licensing of electric-generating facilities, characterization of contaminant distribution and potential risks associated with hazardous waste facilities, the study of environmental factors causing failure of underground pipes, the design/development of surveys to estimate relative hazard of RCRA facilities, and health and safety program adequacy and effectiveness.

 

Alta has a strong  tradition of involvement in community issues, and has been a member if the Town of New Baltimore Planning Board (since 2001) as well as the Town’s  comprehensive planning committee. She was a primary member of the New Baltimore Citizen Planning Advisory Group, a precursor to the comprehensive planning committee and she helped develop town vision and goals statements and recommendations for consideration in update to town Comprehensive Plan.

 

Alta has also been a member of the New Baltimore Conservancy since 1999 where she has assisted in many projects including construction of the world's first recycled milk carton plastic bridge, tidal pond viewing platform, trail and kiosk maintenance. Alta’s passion for conservation  is evidenced continuing involvement in various workshops related to biodiversity. Alta has participated in NYSDEC sponsored workshops at the Huyck Preserve and was a key member of a local group trained in Hudsonia’s Biodiversity Assessment Manual for the Hudson River Estuary Corridor. Alta worked with other local stakeholders from New Baltimore and Coxsackie to complete habitat mapping of ~6300 acres of the corridor between the Hudson River and Thruway/9W in New Baltimore and Coxsackie.

 

Alta is also an avid hiker, photographer/sketcher/weaver of natural subjects. She makes her home in the hamlet of New Baltimore in a wonderfully converted church on the shores of the Hudson River.
